The U.S. Commerce Department is preparing rules to restrict or potentially ban imports of Chinese drones, citing national security concerns about embedded communications, software, and telemetry systems.

Under the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a formal security review of major Chinese drone makers (like DJI) must be completed by December 23, 2025. If no such review is carried out or if they’re found to pose risks, their products could be automatically barred from using regulated frequencies or placed on restricted lists.

This move underscores a shifting trend: strategic decoupling in high-tech sectors, tighter control over supply chains, and a push to favor domestic or allied-friendly technology suppliers.
